Pune: Water was supplied at low pressure to areas like Bhavani Peth, Nana Peth, Guruwar Peth and parts of Swargate, Mukundnagar and Shankarsheth Road as the two-week-long repairs of pipelines started on Monday.
Area residents claimed to have received less water on Monday. They said the administration needed to ensure that all areas received water properly at least once a day and complete closure be avoided.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had recently announced low pressure water supply to some Peth areas till January 22 to aid pipeline works under the equitable water supply project. The PMC’s water supply department had said that new pipelines would be joined to old ones under the plan. Accordingly, the affected areas would receive water at low pressure and for reduced hours till then.
Former corporator from Bhavani Peth area Avinash Bagwe said, “Complaints about low pressure water supply and closures were received in the afternoon. We have approached the authorities for daily supply of as much water as possible. They need to remember that areas like Bhavani Peth, Timber market and Guruwar Peth are densely populated. Residents do not have big storage tanks and are completely dependent on PMC’s supply.”
Bagwe said they would monitor the situation for the next few days and would approach the water supply department in case the situation aggravated due to low supply.
Swargate resident Mohan Badal said water pressure had dropped from Sunday. “We already get less water. A further drop will increase hassles and there will be scarcity. Authorities should conduct daily checks on availability in the affected areas. Also, till January 22, PMC should not impose day-long water cut in areas where supply is already reduced,” he said.
Former corporator from Khadakwamal Ali area Ajay Khedekar said, “In the affected areas, some parts receive water in two slots a day (morning and evening), while some get in one (mostly mornings). The administration should work out a suitable time to provide adequate water. We have told them to provide tankers in case of scarcity.”
PMC’s water supply department officials said that 85 MLD water was usually supplied to the areas and a similar quantity would be maintained. Chief of the department Nandkishor Jagtap said, “The administration has done zoning to maintain water supply to all affected areas. Major works are planned including laying of pipelines as well as repairs and joining of pipelines.”
