Bike patrolling in Terai Central Forest Division to safeguard elephants
Authorities in Rudrapur have planned to create a 10-km bike route along railway tracks in order to prevent elephant fatalities from train collisions. This innovative solution draws inspiration from Rajaji National Park and aims to intensify patrolling and enhance surveillance in specific sensitive areas. If elephants are detected, proactive measures will be taken to safely relocate them, and relevant information will be shared with the Railways. The forest department has also requested the allocation of eight permanent employees for patrolling during winters. To address reduced visibility due to fog, a proposal has been made to create a 10-km dirt bike path along the railway tracks, allowing for more extensive monitoring in less time. Accident-prone areas have already been identified, and shifts will be allotted for day and night patrolling. Other measures include the construction of ramps at sensitive locations and the installation of the Intrusion Detection System, which will transmit timely alerts to the nearest railway station when elephants approach.
