Guwahati: In an attempt to sensitise people of the northeast and motivate them to shift towards using renewable energy, a “Renewable energy and electric vehicle expo”, a first in the region, will be held in the city, from January 19 to 21.
The expo, which will feature over a hundred stalls comprising solar firms both from Assam and other states, will showcase cutting-edge technologies, products, and services in renewable energy and electric vehicles providing a comprehensive display of transformative technologies from solar panels to electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
The expo will be organised by the Federation of Industry and Commerce of North Eastern Region (Finer) and supported by the ministries of DoNER, new and renewable energy, MSME and road transport and highways.
Briefing the media about the necessity of organising such an expo in the region, Mrinal Krishna Choudhury, former director of Assam energy development agency, said, “Assam is lagging behind in largescale usage of renewable energy compared to the other states of the country. The people here in Assam and the northeast have a misconception that its climatic conditions are not suitable to produce solar energy as Assam, including other northeastern states receives more rainfall unlike states like Rajasthan. But the fact is if on an average, 6 units of electricity can be produced in Rajasthan per kilo watt, 5 units can be produced in Assam too.”
Choudhury expressed hope that the upcoming expo will help people debunk the misconceptions and encourage them to use renewable energy.
Director of Finer, Bhaskar Kakoty, said keeping in mind the need to develop a skilled workforce fostering innovation and sustainable energy adoption, the expo will also hold training sessions. “Apart from using for household uses, solar energy can also be used in the agriculture sector. Thus, the expo will also hold training sessions for farmers and general public on use of solar power in different sectors.”
In the sessions, hands-on learning and practical insights will be offered to the participants covering specific skills and knowledge about renewable energy technologies including solar power, wind turbines and biomass energy.
